Our Tea Bags Are Plastic Free
Say what? Plastic tea bags? Who ever would have guessed it. But, yes, you may have seen in the news recently that there is plastic in traditional tea bags contain plastics. Only a very tiny amount, but a very tiny amount that will not biodegrade.
PLASTIC TEA
In Britain alone we drink 165 million cups of tea a day, 60.2 million cups in a year. This huge number means that tiny amount of plastic builds up quickly and is extremely damaging for our environment.
However, we have good news. Our tea bags are not your standard cuppa. They are not only tasty, but also biodegradable.
SOILON
Each tea bag is 100% plastic free, 100% natural and 100% compostable. They are derived from a cornstarch based material called Soilon which is extra-specially clever.
Soilon was created in Japan, and is essentially formed into a mesh from processed glucose and cornstarch.
You can’t pack fannings – the very small particles of tea that are used in traditional tea bags – into this material. Instead, our amazing bags have to have whole leaf tea inside. This is exactly what we wanted. We wanted to give busy mums a way to drink fantastic quality tea, without needing lots of equipment and time. Loose leaf tea is delicious, but newborn babies, toddlers and teenagers, don’t leave a lot of time for cleaning tea pots and infusers.
HOW TO COMPOST
Although compostable on your own compost heap, our tea bags are better off in your food waste collection bin. This is because in an industrial composter, all the right microbes and conditions are in place to break it down in 6-8 weeks. At home, it’d likely take around 2 years.
We love Mother Nature as much as we love mothers of the human kind. So you can enjoy your tea guilt free, and hot (if your kids allow!).
