Raspberry Leaf Tea & Endometriosis

Conflicting advice exists on the benefits of raspberry leaf tea for endometriosis.  Whilst some consider it to have estrogen like effects, others see it's high levels of vitamin B6 and ellagic acid as binders, to help balance hormone levels.  

Herbal tea can certainly be a good support to those suffering with endo, and it's important to pick the right cuppa.  Our Over the Moon tea is designed to support happier periods and some of the key symptoms of endometriosis.

Reasons to Consider Reducing Caffeine Intake with Endometriosis

If you’re managing endometriosis, you might want to think about cutting back on caffeine. Caffeine can be inflammatory, potentially worsening endometriosis pain. It may also cause digestive issues and increase anxiety, all of which are common struggles for those with endometriosis.

So, why is caffeine considered inflammatory? One key reason is its effect on oestrogen levels. Consuming caffeine can raise oestrogen levels, which heightens the risk of developing endometriosis or exacerbating its symptoms. Caffeine can also impair liver function, reducing the liver's ability to filter oestrogen and leading to oestrogen dominance. This dominance is associated with increased inflammation, triggering symptoms like bloating and pain.

Some studies on caffeine and endometriosis have indicated that women who drink one cup of coffee daily have higher oestrogen levels compared to those who abstain.

 

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and endometriosis

Known well for it's benefits at the end of pregnancy, people know less about how beneficial this tea can be for the menstrual cycle in general.  Containing a compound called fragerine, it is linked to strengthening the uterus and pelvic muscles. It has been anecdotally found to reduce period pain and support more regular periods.

Pros

Raspberry leaf is rich in antioxidant called ellagic acid, that has been found in studies to benefit endometriosis.  It essentially alters the metabolism of oestrogen, reducing symptoms.

It is also high in vitamin B6, which binds itself to oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone receptors, and is thought to help balance these hormones.

Cons

Many website quote that raspberry leaf 'may have' an estrogenic effect on the body - mimic-ing estrogen's effects.  However, no research studies on this can be found, and it is based on a general belief that raspberry leaf is 'the women's herb' for this reason.  It is also worth talking to your doctor before drinking it, in case new research has come out, but in 2024, there is no such evidence available.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea has long been drunk for it's calming benefits.  A natural support to sleep and relaxation, it is also believed to help naturally manage pain, and has been shown in studies to have anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic benefits. 

It also contains chrysin, a compound that suppressed the growth of endometrial cells in one research study.

Rose Tea

A 2013 study showed that rose reduced menstrual cramps, something which has traditionally been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years.  With it's delicate floral scent, it's perfect to sip to soothe.

Spearmint Tea

Do you suffer from Endo belly? Peppermint is great after meals but also during a period when bloating is more common.

There was also a study done in 2016 showing that peppermint can reduce the severity of pain from menstrual cramps.

Dandelion Tea

It is a bitter plant which stimulates bile production which encourages liver detoxification, helping it to break down excess oestrogen and removing it savely.

It’s a super tea! It may also increase urine production, boost the immune system, detox the bladder and provide antioxidants.
